From New Plant Design to Production-Line Implementation: A High Flow Filtration Project for Industrial Wastewater Reuse

Industry: Industrial Water Treatment
Application: Wastewater Reclamation & RO Pretreatment
Products: High Flow Filter Cartridges & Stainless Steel Filter Housings
Solution Provider: PULLNER Filtration

1. Customer Background: A New Wastewater Treatment Facility

An industrial water treatment company was developing a new wastewater reclamation facility to help its end customer recover treated industrial wastewater for reuse in production.

The treatment process included preliminary treatment, suspended solids removal, and reverse osmosis (RO) filtration to produce reusable process water.

Before water entered the RO system, an additional filtration stage was required to capture residual particles and reduce the risk of contamination reaching the RO membranes.

As the project involved a new treatment line, the customer was not simply looking for replacement filter cartridges. It needed a filtration solution that could be integrated into the system design, including both high flow filter cartridges and compatible filter housings.

The main purchasing considerations were filtration performance, required flow capacity, installation compatibility, delivery schedule, and long-term maintenance costs.

2. The Challenge: Selecting the Right Filtration System Before Installation

During the initial discussions, several technical and commercial requirements needed to be clarified.

High flow capacity. The filtration system had to accommodate the planned water flow without excessive pressure drop or an unnecessarily large number of filter elements.

Reliable RO protection. The selected cartridges needed to capture residual suspended particles while maintaining the filtration requirements specified for the downstream RO system.

Housing and cartridge compatibility. The filter cartridges, housing dimensions, connections, sealing arrangement, and operating pressure had to match the overall treatment system design.

Uncertain operating conditions. Wastewater characteristics can vary depending on the upstream treatment process. Turbidity, suspended solids, chemical composition, and residual treatment chemicals all influence filter selection and service life.

Project coordination. Because the facility was still under development, the customer needed to confirm the filtration configuration before proceeding with equipment procurement and installation.

PULLNER therefore approached the inquiry as a complete filtration project rather than quoting a cartridge based on micron rating alone.

3. PULLNER's Approach: From Process Evaluation to Technical Selection
Step 1 — Understanding the Treatment Process

PULLNER first reviewed the intended application and the filtration stage within the customer's water treatment process.

The proposed installation point was downstream of the main wastewater pretreatment stage and upstream of the RO system.

This distinction was important. High flow cartridge filters are generally better suited to polishing pretreated water than to handling untreated wastewater containing large amounts of suspended solids.

The technical review focused on the available water quality data, required flow rate, filtration rating, operating pressure, temperature, and installation requirements.

Where available, information on turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and silt density index (SDI) was also considered to help assess the loading on the RO pretreatment filters.

Step 2 — Selecting the High Flow Filter Cartridges

Based on the application requirements, PULLNER evaluated suitable high flow pleated filter cartridges for residual particulate removal.

Polypropylene (PP) pleated media was considered for its compatibility with many industrial water treatment applications, subject to confirmation of the water chemistry and operating conditions.

The selection process considered:

  • Required filtration rating and particle retention performance
  • Cartridge dimensions and effective filtration area
  • Flow capacity and initial differential pressure
  • Dirt-holding capacity and expected replacement interval
  • Chemical compatibility and operating temperature
  • Cartridge installation and replacement requirements

The objective was to provide the required filtration performance without introducing unnecessary flow resistance or maintenance requirements.

Step 3 — Matching the Filter Housing to the System

Instead of supplying filter cartridges separately and leaving the customer to source compatible housings, PULLNER evaluated the cartridge and housing as a complete filtration assembly.

The housing configuration was reviewed against the required flow rate, operating pressure, cartridge quantity, connection type, available installation space, and maintenance access.

Housing material was selected according to the process conditions and project specifications, with suitable stainless steel construction available where required.

This integrated approach helped simplify technical coordination between the filter cartridges, pressure vessel, and the customer's overall water treatment system.

Step 4 — Technical Quotation and Project Confirmation

After the preliminary configuration was established, PULLNER prepared a quotation covering the proposed high flow filter cartridges and compatible filter housings.

The quotation and technical documentation provided the customer with a clearer basis for evaluating the complete filtration solution, including product configuration, operating requirements, delivery schedule, and future consumable supply.

Any outstanding process parameters or installation details were identified for confirmation before finalizing the design.

This reduced the risk of selecting cartridges that met the nominal micron rating but were unsuitable for the actual flow, housing, or operating conditions.

4. Sample Testing: Verifying the Solution Before Full Deployment

Before committing to wider implementation, the customer had the opportunity to evaluate the proposed filtration configuration through sample testing.

The purpose of the trial was to confirm that the selected cartridges could meet the practical requirements of the intended application.

The evaluation focused on several key indicators.

Flow rate and differential pressure: The team assessed whether the selected configuration could accommodate the required flow within the allowable pressure drop.

Filtration performance: The trial considered whether the cartridges provided the required particulate removal under representative operating conditions.

Service life: Differential pressure development and contaminant loading were monitored to help estimate the replacement interval.

Housing compatibility: Cartridge installation, sealing, and replacement access were reviewed against the equipment design.

Operating stability: The filtration assembly was evaluated for suitability under the intended process conditions.

Where possible, the proposed solution was compared with the customer's existing or alternative filtration configuration using equivalent operating conditions.

The trial provided a practical basis for final technical confirmation, rather than relying exclusively on catalogue specifications.

5. From Sample Approval to Production-Line Implementation

Following technical evaluation and confirmation of the required configuration, the project moved toward implementation on the treatment line.

The selected high flow filter cartridges and compatible housings were incorporated into the filtration system design, allowing the customer to proceed with equipment installation and commissioning.

The confirmed configuration also established a reference for subsequent cartridge procurement and maintenance planning.

For the customer, this meant having a defined filtration solution covering the filter element, housing, installation requirements, and replacement supply, rather than managing these components as separate purchasing items.

Once the configuration is validated under actual operating conditions, it can also serve as a basis for deployment across additional compatible treatment lines or future projects.

6. Project Value: More Than Supplying Filter Cartridges

The value of this project lies in the complete process of turning an initial filtration requirement into a technically defined solution.

Integrated equipment supply: High flow cartridges and compatible filter housings can be coordinated through one supplier, simplifying technical communication and procurement.

Application-based selection: Filtration media, micron rating, cartridge quantity, and housing configuration are evaluated against the actual treatment process.

Lower implementation risk: Sample evaluation before wider deployment helps identify potential problems with flow, pressure drop, filtration performance, and installation compatibility.

Maintenance planning: Once service life has been established under real operating conditions, the customer can plan cartridge replacement and spare inventory more effectively.

Scalable configuration: A validated filtration arrangement can provide a reference for additional treatment lines or future water reuse projects.

Actual improvements in operating cost, cartridge service life, and system performance depend on the wastewater characteristics and must be established through operational data.

7. Why PULLNER for Industrial Water Treatment Projects?

For new water treatment facilities, selecting a filter cartridge is only one part of the engineering process.

The filtration element must work together with the housing, pump capacity, upstream pretreatment, downstream membrane system, and maintenance plan.

PULLNER supplies high flow filter cartridges and compatible filtration equipment for industrial water treatment, RO pretreatment, and wastewater reuse applications.

By supporting process evaluation, product selection, technical quotation, sample testing, and customized supply, PULLNER helps customers move from initial project requirements toward a practical filtration configuration.
